• Chris Blair - Non-geometry and Exotic Branes (showhide abstract)

  I will give an introductory overview of non-geometry and exotic branes.

• Olaf Hohm - Physics as (higher) algebra (showhide abstract)

  Lie groups and their Lie algebras play a fundamental role in modern physics. Some theories like Chern-Simons theory are completely encoded in the algebraic data of a Lie algebra (and an invariant quadratic form), raising the natural question whether more general theories can be fully encoded in purely algebraic data. I review various formulations of physical theories in terms of (higher) algebras beyond Lie algebras, such as 1) classical field theory in terms of Lie-infinity algebras, 2) duality covariant formulations of string-/M-theory in terms of (extended) Leibniz-Loday algebras and embedding tensor maps, and 3) first-order formulations in terms of a hierarchy of duality relations governed by differential graded Lie algebras.

• Yolanda Lozano - Non-Abelian T-duality and Holography (showhide abstract)

  We will discuss various AdS solutions constructed through non-Abelian T-duality with a focus on their CFT interpretation. We will see that a common pattern arises in which the CFT duals live in Hanany-Witten brane set-ups involving NS5-branes and Dp-branes of different dimensions. We will see how the CFT can be used to provide global information of non-Abelian T-duality in string theory.

• Diego Marques - Higher-derivative corrections from dualities (showhide abstract)

  I plan to give an overview on how duality constrains higher-derivative interactions, mostly focusing on recent approaches in the context of T-duality covariant frameworks.

• Henning Samtleben - Introduction to Exceptional Field Theory (showhide abstract)

  I review the formalism of exceptional field theories and their use for the study of vacua within consistent truncations of higher-dimensional supergravity.

• Daniel Waldram - Exceptional Geometries and AdS/CFT Correspondence (showhide abstract)

  I will give an overview of the use of exceptional geometry to describe supersymmetric AdS backgrounds and the relationship between the geometrical structures and objects in the dual conformal field theory. In particular, I will focus on the case of N=1 4d SCFTs, exploring the geometry dual to generic marginal deformations, and showing how to calculate the spectrum of chiral operators.

• Nikolay Bobev - Spherical Branes, Supersymmetric Localization, and Holography (showhide abstract)

  I will describe a class of supergravity solutions holographically dual to d-dimensional maximally supersymmetric SYM on S^d. Supersymmetric localization can be employed to calculate the partition function and the vev of a 1/2-BPS Wilson line in the planar limit of the SYM theory. I will present the results of this calculation and will show how they lead to a non-trivial precision tests of holography in the context of non-conformal QFTs and backgrounds that are non asymptotically locally AdS.

• Mariana Grana - Exploring the moduli space of toroidal string compactifications (showhide abstract)

  The moduli space of toroidal compactifications of the bosonic and heterotic string contains special points where the gauge symmetry is enhanced. We review this phenomenon in detail for both string theories. For compactifications of the heterotic string on a circle, we show how to obtain all the the maximal gauge groups, as well as the point in moduli space where they arise, from a Generalized Dynkin diagram. We discuss its extension for compactifications on a 2-torus, which are dual to F-theory compactifications on K3. We finally find the effective action valid at the vicinity of points of maximal enhancement, and show that it can be obtained from Double Field Theory.

• Michael Green - Modular Properties of Superstring Amplitudes and Holography (showhide abstract)

  This talk will survey properties of the low energy expansion of graviton scattering amplitudes in type IIB superstring theory and describe recent work relating these to properties of correlation functions of gauge invariant correlation functions in maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. Particular emphasis will be placed on SL(2,Z) S-duality of the superstring amplitudes and its relation to Montonen-Olive duality of the super Yang-/Mills correlation functions.

• Adolfo Guarino - Holographic & geometric aspects of electromagnetic duality in supergravity (showhide abstract)

  Do electric/magnetic deformations of N=8, D=4 supergravity enjoy a string/M-theory origin, or are they just a four-dimensional artefact? In this talk we address this question and discuss holographic and geometric aspects of electromagnetic duality in various types of gauged supergravities closely related to sphere reductions of string/M-theory.

• Marc Henneaux - Asymptotic structure of electromagnetism and gravity in the asymptotically flat case (showhide abstract)

  Asymptotic symmetries play a central role in holographic duality. The talk will explain the asymptotic structure of electromagnetism and gravity in the asymptotically flat case by making central use of the Hamiltonian formalism. In particular, how the relevant infinite-dimensional asymptotic symmetry groups emerge at spatial infinity, and the extension to higher spacetime dimensions, will be discussed.

• Gianluca Inverso - Introduction to E9 exceptional field theory (showhide abstract)

  Exceptional field theories encode ten- and eleven-dimensional supergravity degrees of freedom, their gauge symmetries and their dynamics in a formalism covariant under the symmetry groups of their lower-dimensional siblings. An especially intriguing and challenging case is the construction of E9 exceptional field theory, associated to the infinite-dimensional symmetry group of two-dimensional maximal supergravity. I will review how these infinite-dimensional symmetries arise in 2d (super)gravity and how an exceptional geometry can be formulated capturing them. I will then describe ongoing work on the construction of the dynamical theory.

• Magdalena Larfors - Heterotic string theory and G2 structure manifolds (showhide abstract)

  Heterotic string compactifications on integrable G2 structure manifolds provide an interesting class of 3 dimensional supergravity models. Solutions of this type preserve minimal supersymmetry, and result in Minkowski or AdS$_3$ geometries. As in the more studied four-dimensional compactifications, the effective field theory describing the three-dimensional supergravity is largely determined by the geometry of the compactification.

  In this talk, I will discuss the mathematical structure behind these three-dimensional supergravity models. We will see that the supersymmetry constraints and Bianchi identities can be encoded in a vector bundle $Q$, and a nilpotent differential $\check {\cal D}$ which acts on forms that take values in this bundle. This reformulation is of use when determining the infinitesimal moduli of these compactifications, i.e. the massless scalar fields in the three-dimensional model. I will show that these moduli are captured by the first cohomology $H^1_{\check {\cal D}}(Y,{\cal Q})$. I will also discuss how one may determine a superpotential that reproduces these results from a three-dimensional field theory approach.

• Alessandro Sfondrini - Exact holography from integrability (showhide abstract)

  My talk is meant to be a pedagogical introduction to some recent efforts to probe holography quantitatively. I will focus in particular on new integrability approaches on the string worldsheet, which I intend to introduce and motivate physically. I will conclude by discussing the outstanding challenges of this program, and how I believe that they may be addressed by exploiting some special features of low-dimensional holography.

• Charles Strickland-Constable - N=1 Minkowski backgrounds: involutivity, moment maps and moduli (showhide abstract)

  I will describe how general N=1 Minkowski backgrounds can be described as a generalised geometry analogue of complex manifolds with trivial canonical bundle. This description enables the study of their moduli spaces in terms of generalised geometric cohomology groups. Some explicit examples will be discussed.

• Dennis Sullivan - Why are three manifolds the way that they are? (showhide abstract)

  The Poincaré-Thurston Picture of Three manifolds was finally proved by Gregori Perelman (2002) after a full century of progress by geometers, topologists and analysts. Perelman's final attack depended on completing a study begun by Richard Hamilton of the Ricci flow on the space of metrics. This Ricci flow project started in earnest with the appearance of Thurston's conjectural full picture and partial proof of same (circa1980).

  The Poincaré-Thurston picture says that any closed oriented topological 3D manifold is covered by finitely many characteristic regions which carry homogeneous geometries depending on finitely many parameters. These regions are canonical and characteristic in the sense they can be well defined up to diffeomorphic deformation from the identity. The regional geometries do not seem to fit together geometrically.

  These regions are obtained by firstly removing a (possibly empty) canonical finite characteristic set of two spheres. Then secondly by removing from the complement of these two spheres a (possibly empty) canonical finite characteristic set of torii which are incompressible in the sense that no closed curve on one of the torii can be spanned by a continuous mapping of a disc into the ambient space unless that is already so on that torus itself.

  There are eight geometries that appear: three affine geometries, three of negative hyperbolic type and two of positive elliptic type. One can notice an appearances of lorentz isometries: O(1,1) in the first type, O(2,1) and O(3,1) in the second type and O(4,1) in the third type.

  The O(1,1) aspect of the affine geometries combines the O(2,1) and the O(3,1) geometries across toroidal walls. Black holes connect the geometries across the spherical walls. Finally, there are constructions that produce simply connected (3,1) lorentz geometries on vast canonical 4D manifolds which are "observably homogeneous."

• Alessandro Tomasiello - On supersymmetry breaking in supergravity (showhide abstract)

  I will consider non-supersymmetric vacua in string theory. First I will discuss a procedure to generate such solutions starting from some supersymmetric classes; this can be partially read off from a deformation of the pure spinor method. I will then focus on a class of AdS7 non-supersymmetric vacua that can be generated by the more conventional method of consistent truncations. I will discuss their stability, finding several perturbative and non-perturbative decay channels for most of them.
